Marsha Billes, DO

Chair of Board of Directors, LIY Institute - (Institute Director Term until April 2022)

Dr. Marsha Billes is a dedicated and compassionate Family Physician who has been successful at combining traditional and integrative medicine to reduce chronic disease and promote wellness. She is Board Certified in Family Practice, and Integrative Medicine and she is also Certified by the International Association of Yoga Therapists. She has been using Yoga Therapy and Measured Yoga Therapy in her practice as an additional modality for assessing the health of her patients- both individually as well as teaching chair yoga therapy in a group for the past three and a half years. Dr. Billes graduated from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1989 and did her Internship and Family Practice Residency at Beaumont-of Farmington Hills in 1990-1992. She was also Chief of Staff at Beaumont-Farmington Hills (previously known as Botsford Hospital) in 2003. She continues to serve as an Associate Clinical Professor through MSU-COM. She thoroughly has enjoyed teaching medical students and P. A students and she has spent 26 years in private practice. Dr. Billes has also been a National Speaker on Diabetic Neuropathy and treatment with forms of methylated folate. She currently practices at The Beaumont Weight Control Center in Canton , Michigan as well as supervising the Wellness Program at Envision Health -a program which she actually helped develop. She is also doing Integrative Medicine consults there in addition to using Yoga Therapy. These techniques have helped lower blood pressure, stress and hemoglobin a1c levels as just a few benefits that Yoga as Medicine can provide. Dr Billes also serves as a Director on the Board of Life In Yoga Institute and she continues to work with Dr Rajan Nayarayan using the Biowell machine which uses photonic imagery to assess stress, vitality and energy levels and organ system balance using pre and post readings with Yoga therapy techniques. She is very excited about sharing these various modalities which have been life changing for her patients and have enhanced her life personally.

C. Rajan Narayanan, PhD,
C-IAYT

Executive Director, LIY Institute and Foundation; - (Institute Director Term until April 2021, Foundation Trustee until April 2022)

Dr. Narayanan is one of the founders and inspiration behind the formation of Life in Yoga Institute and Foundation. He is the chief yoga therapy clinician of Life in Yoga and heads the operation of all the clinics, as well as serves as the CME Program Director. He has developed the system of Measured Yoga Therapy with Electro-Photonic Imaging published at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5934952/ He has developed the Life in Yoga 5 by 3 by 1 Approach, and the techniques of CRE breath, Dance Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Chandogya Upanishad Meditation and several mudras like the AtmaVyakta Mudra, BrahmaVyakta Mudra, etc. He has also translated and written a commentary on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. He has studied Yoga techniques from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Institute, Satchidananda Ashram of Yogaville (Virginia), and Swami Bua of New York. He is also a Reiki master and Pranic Healer and has been trained by Dr. Vasantha Krishnaswamy of Chennai, India. In December 2009, SVYASA (Vivekananda Univ) honored him for his innovative and original contributions in the field of yoga.

Dr. Dilip Sarkar, MD,
FACS, CAP, C-IAYT

Director, Life in Yoga Institute (Director term until April 2021)

Dr. Sarkar is one of the foremost experts in Yoga Therapy who combines his 40-year experience in Conventional Medicine with his extensive knowledge of Integrative Medicine, including Ayurveda and Yoga Therapy. After 25 years of practice as a Vascular Surgeon, Chief of Staff at Portsmouth General Hospital and Associate Professor of Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, Dr. Sarkar retired from practice after suffering a heart attack and undergoing by-pass surgery in 2001. Since then, he developed a profound interest in Ayurvedic medicine and Yoga Therapy, devoting considerable time to the study of these ancient treatments and wellness philosophies in Virginia and in India. He has completely reversed the damage in his cardiovascular system and is on no medications. Dr. Sarkar was served on the Board member at the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) as President for six years ending in 2017. He serves on several local and national healthcare boards as: Founding Member, National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) and Member of its Research and Standards Committee; and, Fellow, American Association of Integrative Medicine (AAIM). He is a certified Ayurvedic Practitioner, and continues to practice and teach classes in Yoga Therapy, Mind/Body Connection, Ayurvedic wellness, Integrative Nutrition, and Integrative Medicine.

Korotkov, PhD

Director, LIY Institute - (Institute Director Term until April 2021)

Dr. Korotkov is Professor of Computer Science and Biophysics at St. Petersburg University of Informational Technologies, Mechanics and Optics in Russia and a senior researcher at St. Petersburg Research institute of Physical Activity and Sport President of the.International Union of Medical and Applied Bioelectrography He has published over 400 papers in leading journals on physics and biology, and he holds 15 patents on biophysics inventions. He is the author of 12 books, translated to many European languages. Prof. Korotkov has led a research career for over 40 years, combining rigorous scientific method with an insatiable curiosity about things of the spirit and the soul with deep respect for all life. He has given lectures, seminars and training sessions in 56 countries, presenting papers and workshops at more than 100 national and international conferences. Dr Korotkov is recipient of several Russian and international prestigious awards, including the Brand Laureate International Brand Personality Award 2013 from Asia Pacific Brands Foundation, Ministry of Sport of Russia Award 2013 and 2017, President of Sri-Lanka Award 2010, President Putin Award 2014, Sultan of Bali Award 2016, Peace Flag Ambassador in Argentina 2017 and others.

Bipin Solanki, MD,FACS

Director, Life in Yoga Institute (Term through April 2022)

Bipin Solanki, MD, retired in 2016 after 45 years of practice, was a practicing Surgeon in Jackson Heights, New York. He has a deep interest in Yoga as Medicine. He is a regular practitioner of yoga and seeks to bring it into main stream medicine. He graduated from the B J Medical College, Gujarat Univ, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India in 1971. He completed residency at Montefiore Hospital in Bronx. He specialized in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery, and was affiliated with Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens.

Uday Nanavaty, MD

Director (Term through April 2022)

Dr. Uday Nanavaty is a pulmonologist in Maryland with practices in Laurel and Catonsville and association with a number of hospitals in the area. He is also specialized as in internal medicine, sleep medicine and critical care. He received his medical degree from Baroda Medical College and has been in practice for more than 20 years. He is a regular practitioner of yoga and approaches his practice from the holistic perspective of Integrative Medicine.

Selvan Senthamil, PhD

Director, Life in Yoga Institute (Term through April 2022)

Dr. Selvan is a research scientist in Rockville, Maryland. Prior to taking up this position as Vice President of Research and Development, he was Research Associate Professor, Scientific Director, Melanoma Translational Research Program in the Department of Medical Oncology in Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. He is also a regular practitioner of yoga, has been involved with VYASA Los Angeles, and has been active in research for IBS with yoga therapy. He believes in yoga, having been a significant beneficiary himself, and would happily pursue a full time career in yoga therapy research, except for the need to pay his bills. His paying job interest is: Cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy: Cancer vaccine, and Dendritic cell and NK Cell-based therapy; Immune-monitoring; Tumor-specific antigens recognized by T cells; Tumor-escape mechanisms; GLP/GMP-Cell-based therapeutic product manufacturing and FDA regulations; Animal models. He has a number of publications in this field.

Ashok Gupta

Director, Life in Yoga Institute (Term through April 2024)

Ashok Gupta retired in 2019 after owning and managing Jam-Ko Engineering Company for 22 years. This company was a metal stamping business supplying automotive parts to tier one suppliers. After Masters in Electrical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh Ashok had started his career in the Indian Railways Service of Electrical Engineers and immigrated to USA in 1978. He did his MBA and worked in corporate America till 1997 when he bought Jam-Ko Engineering Company. Ashok serves on the board of trustees of Hindu Temple and Cultural Center of Michiana, South Bend, Indiana.

Ashok and his wife Madhu have three well settled daughters and four grandsons. They spend their time equally in Granger, Indiana and Parrish, Florida

Sreejith Kalam Chundayil

Director, Life in Yoga Institute (Term through April 2023)

Sreejith Chundayil is a dedicated yoga practitioner and therapist given his spiritual interests. By professional training he works in the field of Information Technology, managing systems at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC. He serves as a dedicated volunteer for Life in Yoga Measured Yoga Therapy clinic in the Washington area, while also helping to train others.

Ratna Nandakumar, PhD,
Professor, School of Education,
University of Delaware

Chair of Board and Trustee, Life in Yoga Foundation (Term through April 2021)

Ratna Nandakumar is a professor in the School of Education at the University of Delaware. Her research spans the areas of applied statistics and psychometrics. Ratna’s interest in yoga stems from her deep interest in spirituality sowed by her parents and a need for a balanced life. She was introduced to Transcendental Meditation by her father in early 1980s. Around the same time she also started learning hatha yoga in Illinois as a means to balance her health, family, and graduate school. Since then her passion for yoga increased as it helped her to manage physical, mental, spiritual, and worldly demands. Over the years her curiosity and longing for deeper inner experience further exposed her to many different yoga traditions and practices. At the University of Delaware she has helped students found the Yoga Club and has been serving as the faculty advisor for the Club. She has also taught yoga to faculty and staff as part of the UD’s Wellness Program and at the Newark Senior Center in Delaware.

Ratna has been associated with Life in Yoga (www.lifeinyoga.org) activities since 2013. Life in Yoga approach to yoga has transformed Ratna’s experience and understanding of yoga to new levels. She contributes to the therapy, educational, and research programs of Life in Yoga. In addition, she currently serves as the Chair of the Board of Life in Yoga Foundation and on the Board of Council for Yoga Accreditation International.

Prasad Challagulla, DMD

Trustee, Life in Yoga Foundation (Term through April 2021)

Dr. Prasad Challagulla is specialized as an Endodontist and has his practice in Valley Endodontics and Microsurgery in Ownings Mill in Maryland. Dr. Challagulla received his Bachelors of Dental Surgery from Bangalore University, Masters in Public Health at Boston University and post-graduate endodontic degree from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Dental Medicine. During his residency, Dr. Challagulla taught several microsurgery courses to global audiences, and he was also the lead investigator in a published research article entitled “Effect of Splint Coverage in Laser Doppler Readings.” Dr. Challagulla has a deep passion for his role as an educator, which led to his appointment as an Adjunct Assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania and has enabled him to gain direct exposure to the most current treatment modalities in the endodontic field. His deep spiritual interest and effect of body-mind-spirit on health draws him to support the work of Life in Yoga.

Suma Venkatesh

Trustee, Life in Yoga Foundation (Term through April 2022)

Ms. Suma Venkatesh is a dedicated Life in Yoga teacher who has practiced yoga for over 7 years. With her MBA degree she is a business analyst working as a consultant for Amtrak, having previously spent many years at Marriott. She active contributes to the mission of Life in Yoga both with her teaching and raising funds. In her own words: "I hope to share the wonderful results of correct breathing techniques, meditation for better living and an understanding of the why's of life to everyone I can meet."

Ashim Dey

Trustee, Life in Yoga Foundation (Term through April 2022)

Mr. Ashim Dey, while teaching yoga as community in Clifton, VA, every weekend, works for the Treasury Department. He is a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology. He has been a practitioner of Yoga for about 25 years. He has been committed to bringing the benefits of yoga to society both by his service as a high level teacher and also mobilizing donation resources for Life in Yoga's mission. In his own words:"I like to reach out to more people with the true understanding of yoga and its benefits. With appropriate resources, I like to establish more yoga lesson plans in specific subjects and organize more classes and retreats in the DC metro area and beyond."

Bal Mukund Dhar, PhD

Trustee, Life in Yoga Foundation (Term through April 2023)

Bal Mukund Dhar is a scientist. Trained as a material scientist at Johns Hopkins University, he went onto to become a post-doctoral fellow at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Even while he is an entrepreneur with some 15 patents to his credit, his life changing experience of overcoming an incurable condition that was severely affecting his life, brought him as a dedicated supporter and active promoter of Life in Yoga efforts. He helped launch the daily zoom-based online yoga sessions when COVID started taking a toll on physical and mental health in April 2020. The extraordinary benefits to senior citizens from this program has resulted in two additional sessions being started and reaching out globally beyond the United States.

Devinder Mahajan

Trustee and Vice-Chair of Board, Life in Yoga Foundation (Term through April 2023)

Devinder Mahajan is a community leader and philanthropist from Houston. His experience of reveral of his heart condition, which he has stated in the public domain made him realize the power of mantras. Even though he was involved with other yoga programs he came to realize the unique contribution and expansion of yogic knowledge coming from Life in Yoga, and decided he must support to spread the work of Life in Yoga to more people who can be benefited.

Neeta Shukla, MD

Trustee, Life in Yoga Foundation (Term through April 2023)

Dr. Neeta Shukla is a practicing physician in The Woodlands (northern suburb of Houston) specialized in Anesthesiology. She is an active supporter of yoga therapy and seeks to promote it and bring it into modern medicine. She is a certified as a yoga instructor by SVYASA. She is actively involved in community activities in The Woodlands.
